Vi Kobal
Vi Kobal is a digital artist and photographer from New York City. Their photography documents the changing atmosphere of New York’s cityscape, as the city has rapidly changed in the past few years. They noticed this rapid change, took the streets as a 15-year-old with their mother’s Nikon, and snapped away at whatever looked aesthetically pleasing. Kobal’s photography has developed into moody and colorful abstract work that reflects their feelings about the changing environment. They draw upon their childhood memories of New York and take influence from their mother, who took photos of New York City in the 1980s and 1990s. With their experience in the darkroom of their old high school photography class, they incorporate different modes of film photography into their work. Using digital and film photography, they have created a style of art they can call their own; a lost memory, one that a developing adolescent mind has muddled, one you cannot exactly remember. Their art is a cloudy memory, but when you finally remember, all the colors come through.
